Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated that any dialogue with Japan regarding a peace treaty can only begin if Tokyo abandons what Moscow describes as its “anti-Russian course.”
Spokesperson Maria Zakharova told foreign media that Japan’s current policies have brought bilateral cooperation to a standstill, making progress on peace negotiations impossible under present conditions.
Historically, Russia, as the main successor of the Soviet Union, and Japan have never signed a formal peace treaty to officially end hostilities from World War II, according to A2 CNN.
Since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine in 2022, Japan has emerged as one of the staunchest supporters of Kyiv in the Indo-Pacific region, providing broad financial—but non-lethal—assistance, including sanctions against Russia and humanitarian aid.
