A new round of peace talks between Russia and Ukraine is being held today in Istanbul, marking a continued effort to end the war that began with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
The discussions are taking place at the Çırağan Palace, with both sides confirming their attendance—but without the presence of Russian President Vladimir Putin or Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Delegations Arrive, But Leaders Stay Away
According to reports from Klix.ba, although President Zelensky had initially signaled his intention to attend previous negotiations, he chose not to travel to Istanbul once it became clear that President Putin—who had selected the location and called for the talks—would not be present.
This latest round follows one of Ukraine’s most successful military operations in the past three years, which may significantly affect the tone and direction of the negotiations.
Ukrainian Drone Strike: A Game-Changer?
Just over the weekend, Ukraine reportedly launched a major drone strike operation, with drones smuggled into Russian territory via trucks. The attack allegedly destroyed 40 Russian aircraft, including a number of strategic bombers—an event that could shift leverage at the negotiation table.
International Mediators Also Present
In addition to the Russian and Ukrainian delegations, the talks are also being attended by international mediators. Apart from Turkish officials, a delegation from the United States is expected.
Although former U.S. President Donald Trump will not attend, his envoys Keith Kellogg and Steve Witkoff are reportedly participating in the discussions, signaling interest from multiple global powers in the outcome.
What’s Next?
While expectations are modest and the absence of top-level leadership may limit immediate breakthroughs, today’s meeting reflects a continued push for diplomacy amid a volatile and evolving battlefield situation.
As both sides assess their strategic positions, all eyes remain on whether these talks will pave the way for a broader ceasefire agreement or peace framework in the months ahead.
