The upcoming meeting between the Russian and American presidents, scheduled for August 15 in Alaska, could mark a significant turning point in the path toward peace in Ukraine, said Slovak President Peter Pellegrini.

“This is an important step toward a resolution that leads to peace in Ukraine. The US-Russia summit could become a decisive moment in negotiations to end hostilities,” Pellegrini told the TASR news agency.

“The goal is to declare a ceasefire, which would be followed by talks on ending the war and Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction,” he added.

According to the Slovak president, negotiations between Russia and Ukraine must be pursued as intensively as possible, with active involvement from the United States and the European Union.

“Europe’s security is at risk today. All countries, including Russia, must commit to peace efforts on the continent,” he emphasized.

However, Pellegrini acknowledged that it will be very difficult for the parties involved in the Ukraine conflict to reach a compromise solution. Still, he believes the Russia-US summit could lay the groundwork for easing international tensions.

US President Donald Trump earlier expressed hope to hold a meeting with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, in Alaska on August 15.

The date and location were later confirmed by Russian presidential aide Yury Ushakov, who said the two presidents would focus their discussions on opportunities for a sustainable resolution to the Ukrainian crisis.

Ushakov also stated that the Kremlin expects the two leaders to meet on Russian soil following their talks in Alaska.
