Russia has called on the United States to clarify its position regarding the possible resumption of nuclear tests. The spokesperson for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova, stated that the signals coming from Washington are contradictory and could provoke reciprocal measures from Moscow.
“The question remains open, including in the United States: are we talking about testing nuclear weapons delivery systems, or about explosive testing of nuclear components — in violation of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty?” said Zakharova.
She warned that if Washington plans to resume nuclear tests, it would compel other countries, including Russia, to take similar steps.
“This is a development that could trigger responses from other states, including Russia, as President Vladimir Putin has already warned,” she added.
The statement comes after U.S. President Donald Trump ordered the American military last week to resume preparations for nuclear testing — without clarifying whether it refers to missile systems with nuclear capacity or actual explosive tests.
Shortly thereafter, Putin instructed his senior officials to draft proposals for potential nuclear weapons tests.
Meanwhile, Russia has decided to respond to Venezuela’s call for assistance. The Foreign Ministry spokesperson confirmed that Moscow is closely monitoring political developments in Latin American and Caribbean countries.
Earlier, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro requested military support from Russia following repeated threats from Donald Trump.
