The Russian Embassy in London issued a strong warning on Wednesday, saying that the United Kingdom’s new sanctions targeting the Russian oil giants Rosneft and Lukoil will backfire by destabilizing global energy markets.
According to the embassy, the attacks on Russia’s major oil and gas companies are disrupting international energy markets and hurting consumers worldwide, including British citizens and local businesses.
The statement added that these measures will further worsen energy insecurity in the Global South.
“Contrary to the loud assurances of British leaders, these restrictions will not affect Russia’s foreign policy,” the embassy said. “It is time for London to understand that attempts to blackmail our country and speak to us in the language of sanctions and threats are meaningless and futile.”
The Russian Embassy claimed that the UK’s actions stem from the “growing desperation of the British establishment” amid the worsening position of Ukrainian forces on the battlefield. It warned that the pressure of sanctions only complicates peaceful dialogue and leads to further escalation, emphasizing that Russia will continue to protect its national interests and ensure economic stability.
The UK government earlier announced a new sanctions package targeting Rosneft, Lukoil, several banks, and dozens of tankers and companies from China, the UAE, India, Thailand, and Singapore, accusing them of helping transport Russian oil.
These measures are part of London’s ongoing efforts to limit Russia’s energy revenues amid its continued war in Ukraine.
