Romania’s government has condemned Moscow after debris from a Russian drone strike on Ukraine crashed inside its territory — a serious cross-border incident highlighting the growing risks of the war spilling into NATO soil.
Foreign Minister Oana Toiu confirmed that drone fragments fell in an inhabited area following Russian attacks on Ukrainian commercial ports, calling the strike “another reckless attack on Ukraine with consequences on Romanian territory.”
“These actions are part of a clear pattern in Russia’s war of aggression,” Toiu wrote on X. “We will not hesitate to increase the price Russia pays for such reckless and illegal actions.”
According to Romania’s Ministry of Defense, radar systems detected multiple drones near national airspace on the night of November 10–11, prompting the preventive activation of air defense systems.
At around 1 a.m., a drone crashed near the village of Grindu, located about five kilometers south of the border with Ukraine. Due to poor weather conditions, fighter jets on standby were unable to take off, authorities said.
Toiu added that Romania, the European Union, and the United States have already imposed sanctions with “significant impact” on Russia and are now preparing additional measures to raise the cost of aggression.
This is not the first time Russian military activity has endangered Romanian territory, as debris from similar drone attacks has previously landed in border regions — incidents seen as dangerous provocations against a NATO member state.
