Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated that there is no reason for enthusiasm regarding the pressure exerted by U.S. President Donald Trump on Europe and Ukraine, as significant work remains in the peace negotiations over the war in Ukraine, according to Russian news agency RIA.
The United States has acted as a mediator in talks between Russia and Ukraine on various versions of a plan to end the conflict. However, no agreement has been reached so far, despite repeated assurances from Trump that a deal could be achieved.
“Much work remains to be done,” Lavrov reportedly said.
Lavrov also noted that Trump has placed Ukraine and Europe “in their place,” but he warned that this should not be interpreted as a reason for enthusiastic optimism about the situation.
Deputy Foreign Minister Aleksandr Grushko emphasized that any potential agreement must exclude the possibility of Ukraine joining NATO and prevent the deployment of foreign troops on Ukrainian territory, according to Izvestia.
