At least 10 people were killed after Russia struck a five-story residential building in the northeastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv with a ballistic missile, local officials said on March 8.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said rescue teams have been working through the night to search the rubble after the attack.

“Since nightfall, rescue workers have been dismantling the debris of a residential building in Kharkiv following a Russian ballistic missile strike,” Zelensky said on Telegram.

According to officials, the entrance of the building was destroyed and the upper floors of a nearby structure were also damaged. Two children were among those killed, while at least 15 people were injured.

Kharkiv regional governor Oleh Synyehubov said 19 residential buildings were damaged in overnight Russian strikes.

Zelensky urged Western partners to respond and increase air defense support for Ukraine, warning that Russia continues to target residential and critical infrastructure.

Russia denies deliberately targeting civilian areas. The Russian Defense Ministry said its forces carried out overnight strikes on Ukraine’s military-industrial facilities, military airfields, and energy infrastructure.

The attack comes as Moscow, Kyiv, and Washington have been involved in negotiations aimed at ending the war that began with Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.
