NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has warned that Russia must clearly understand that any attempt to attack Ukraine again after a peace agreement would result in severe consequences.
In a strong statement, Rutte stressed that the response from NATO allies would be “devastating,” underlining the Alliance’s firm commitment to guaranteeing Ukraine’s long-term security.
According to Rutte, these warnings are an integral part of NATO’s approach to shaping security guarantees for Kyiv. He emphasized that the primary goal is to deter any future aggression and to send a clear message to Russian President Vladimir Putin that a return to conflict will not be tolerated.
“If, after peace is achieved, Russia attempts once again to use military force against Ukraine, the response will be immediate and decisive,” Rutte said, adding that NATO is working closely with its partners to establish credible and effective defense mechanisms.
The statement comes at a time when various scenarios for ending the war in Ukraine are being discussed, alongside efforts to ensure lasting stability in Eastern Europe.
NATO has repeatedly reaffirmed that support for Ukraine will continue, and that any peace agreement must be accompanied by concrete security guarantees to prevent renewed Russian aggression.
