NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte issued a stark warning during a joint press conference on Thursday with foreign ministers from Weimar+ countries, stressing that Europe must increase its defense spending to prepare for emerging threats.

Rutte’s comments followed German Defense Chief Carsten Breuer’s recent assessment that Russia could be ready by 2029 or 2030 to challenge NATO’s resolve in defending its territory, according to The Guardian.

“We are safe at the moment. But we might not be safe in three or five years, which is why we need to spend more,” Rutte stated.

He underscored the importance of boosting defense production in Europe, not only to meet NATO needs but also to ensure long-term security and deterrence.

On the war in Ukraine, Rutte emphasized that the alliance must ensure Ukraine is in the best possible position — both militarily and diplomatically — to resist Russia’s unprovoked aggression and to negotiate any future peace agreement.

“We must make sure that Putin doesn’t try again,” he added, pointing to the long-term stakes of the conflict.

Rutte’s remarks reflect a broader shift in NATO’s posture as leaders anticipate greater instability ahead, especially amid growing concerns over Russia’s strategic ambitions.
