The German government’s special envoy for the Western Balkans, Manuel Sarrazin, has called for the rapid formation of a new government in Kosovo following the February 9 elections.
In an interview conducted in Serbo-Croatian, the German diplomat stated that it is not for others to decide how the government in Kosovo should be formed.
“We must wait and see how the political situation in the Republic of Kosovo will develop. It would be desirable for a government to be formed as soon as possible and for the new government to actively engage in dialogue. Of course, we also expect this from Serbia. However, it is not up to us to decide how the process of forming the government in the Republic of Kosovo will proceed. This is a decision made by Kosovo,” said the German government’s special envoy for the Western Balkans, Manuel Sarrazin.
Meanwhile, he also spoke about the new EU envoy for the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue, Peter Sorensen, saying that he would place a new emphasis on dialogue.
“With Peter Sorensen, the new EU Special Representative for the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia, we have a new person who will continue to lead this process on behalf of the EU. The initial conversations we had left a very good impression of him as a person. He will certainly place a new emphasis on dialogue while, at the same time, trying to achieve progress through fundamental work in bringing the two countries closer,” Sarrazin told DW.
He said that in the past, Germany and he personally had a duty to support the work of European institutions and the EU chief negotiator.
“We will work closely together in the coming weeks and months. This will certainly be true for the new German government, as Germany supports the European approach to the dialogue and the people leading it.”
“I hope that now the essential work for finding solutions will begin again. It is time to work hard to find concrete solutions. I believe that Mr. Sorensen is the right person for this task,” Sarrazin emphasized.
