German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called on Monday for unity between Europe and the United States regarding responsibility and the assurance of security for Ukraine.

He made these remarks just hours after American officials stated that the European Union might not be consulted about the initiation of peace talks with Russia, aiming to end the war in Ukraine.

“There should be no divisions on security and responsibility between Europe and the United States,” Scholz told reporters after an emergency European summit in Paris.

“NATO operates on the principle that we always act together and share the risks, and this is how we guarantee security. This must not be questioned,” Scholz added.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, meanwhile, stated that Ukraine would not participate in talks between American and Russian officials in Saudi Arabia. Speaking to the press in Abu Dhabi at the beginning of his Middle East visit, including to Saudi Arabia and Turkey, Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine was not aware of talks between the US and Russia in Saudi Arabia and stressed that no negotiations about Ukraine but without Ukraine would yield any results.

“We cannot accept any agreement for us, without us,” Zelensky told reporters in the capital of the United Arab Emirates.
