German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has issued a statement regarding the recent developments in Syria, expressing support for the fall of President Bashar al-Assad’s brutal regime. Scholz described the end of Assad’s rule as a positive turning point for the war-torn country, which has suffered under years of oppression, violence, and forced displacement.
“Assad brutally oppressed his people, has countless lives on his conscience, and forced many Syrians to flee their homeland, many of whom sought refuge in Germany. The Syrian people have suffered immensely. Therefore, the end of Assad’s rule is good news,” Scholz stated.
The Chancellor emphasized the importance of quickly restoring law and order in Syria, ensuring that all religious communities and minorities receive protection now and in the future.
“What matters now is that law and order are swiftly restored in Syria. All religious communities, all minorities must enjoy protection now and in the future,” Scholz added.
Scholz also reiterated the importance of a political solution to the Syrian conflict in accordance with United Nations Security Council Resolution 2254, which outlines a roadmap for peace and stability in the region.
“We will judge future rulers based on whether they allow all Syrians to live with dignity and self-determination, defend Syria’s sovereignty against malicious foreign interventions, and live in peace with their neighbors,” Scholz concluded.
As Syria enters a new phase after Assad’s downfall, Scholz’s remarks reflect Germany’s ongoing commitment to supporting a peaceful, democratic future for Syria and its people.
