German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed strong criticism of American billionaire Elon Musk’s support for far-right groups in Europe, calling it “completely unacceptable.” Scholz emphasized that the future of Germany would not be decided by social media moguls but by German voters.
Musk, in January, had controversially stated that only the far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD) could “save Germany.”
Scholz’s Concerns Over Musk’s Support for AfD
While Musk’s personal insults have garnered attention, Scholz is more concerned with Musk’s support for the AfD. “What we must criticize is not that some billionaire from another country expresses his opinion, but rather what he says,” Scholz remarked at a press conference.
“He supports the far-right across Europe, in the UK, in Germany, and many other countries, and that is something that is completely unacceptable. It threatens the democratic development of Europe and our community, and that must be criticized,” Scholz added.
Musk’s European Political Involvement
Musk’s growing involvement in European politics, including his support for the AfD and past backing of Donald Trump’s election campaign, has raised concerns among political leaders across Europe. In addition to supporting the far-right in Germany, Musk has also called for the release of the imprisoned British anti-Islam extremist Tommy Robinson and accused UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer of tyranny, suggesting that Starmer should be imprisoned.
This development has sparked alarm among European policymakers who worry about Musk’s influence on the continent’s political landscape.
