In his traditional end-of-year speech, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz highlighted the role of migrants in Germany’s economic success and called for unity in facing domestic and international challenges.

Addressing the German population ahead of the New Year, Scholz emphasized the contribution of foreigners to the country’s economy:
“We are 84 million – just one percent of the world’s population! And yet, we are the third-largest economic power in the world because we are diligent,” said the Social Democratic leader. He reflected on the economic challenges awaiting Germany in 2025:
“Among us are also many foreigners who contribute and are part of Germany’s success story. We must not allow anyone to divide us!”

Reflecting on the Magdeburg Tragedy

Scholz’s speech followed a similar tone to President Frank-Walter Steinmeier’s Christmas address, touching on the tragic December 20 attack in Magdeburg.
“Shocked, we stand in the face of this inhuman act. How can a single deranged individual cause such pain? Many people in Magdeburg and beyond are searching for strength to move forward after such a catastrophe,” Scholz said.

The Chancellor stressed the importance of solidarity, noting the collective response to the tragedy:
“We are a country that stands together, and this has been strongly felt in recent days in Magdeburg.” He commended the assistance and support provided by citizens during this crisis.

On December 20, 2024, a Saudi national intentionally drove a vehicle into a Christmas market in Magdeburg, killing five and injuring over 200. Certain groups exploited the incident to incite violence against foreigners.

Appeal for Electoral Participation

Scholz urged citizens to take responsibility by actively participating in the parliamentary elections scheduled for February 23, 2025:
“The future of Germany is in your hands – citizens and voters,” Scholz stated.

He took a jab at social media’s influence, adding:
“Not those who dominate social media,” without directly naming Elon Musk, the owner of platform X. Musk recently sparked controversy by endorsing the AfD party in an opinion piece published in Die Welt.

Facing Challenges Together

Scholz also addressed Germany’s key challenges, including economic pressures, inflation, and ongoing support for Ukraine in its resistance to Russian aggression. He emphasized that these difficulties can be overcome collectively:
“With mutual respect, trust, and commitment to one another, we can achieve great things together.”

A Tradition Since 1952

The tradition of the German Chancellor’s end-of-year address dates back to 1952 when Konrad Adenauer delivered the first such speech. It has since become a significant moment of political communication, airing on public television every New Year’s Eve evening.
