Berlin, February 21, 2025 – German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty, stressing that Berlin will not make decisions on Kyiv’s behalf. His remarks came during his final major campaign rally ahead of Sunday’s elections.
Scholz’s comments follow a tense week in international relations, as U.S. President Donald Trump resumed direct contact with Russia for the first time since Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Trump’s interactions with Russian officials have raised concerns among European allies, especially after his recent clashes with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
“Germany and Europe must remain unwavering in their stance on this conflict,” Scholz stated.
“We will not abandon Ukraine, and we will not make decisions over its head. We will ensure that Ukraine remains a country that can freely choose its own government,” he added.
Germany is the second-largest provider of military aid to Ukraine after the United States. Under former U.S. President Joe Biden, Washington maintained strong support for Kyiv, a stance that has been called into question under the Trump administration.
