Scientists have warned that Earth could be struck by a major volcanic eruption during this century, with no plans in place for protection.

Such an event, according to climate expert Dr. Markus Stoffel, could cause a “climatic chaos” similar to the 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora in Indonesia. This eruption released 24 cubic miles of gases and ash into the atmosphere, causing a drastic drop in global temperatures.

In addition to the temperature impact, this situation led to a surge in diseases, resulting in thousands of deaths. Unlike the “Year Without a Summer” that followed the Tambora eruption, a 21st-century volcano would add further complications due to humanity’s reliance on fossil fuels. Dr. Michael Rampino explains that the effects could be even worse than those in 1815, as the world is more unstable today.

Research by Dr. Thomas Aubry suggests that a hotter atmosphere would disperse sulfur gases and aerosols more rapidly, intensifying the cooling effect.
