Tensions have escalated in the Eastern Mediterranean after a second drone attack targeted a British military base in Cyprus, according to officials from Government of Cyprus.

Authorities reported that two unmanned drones heading toward the British base RAF Akrotiri were successfully intercepted before reaching their target. The attempted strike came shortly after air raid sirens sounded at the base earlier in the day.

Earlier during the night, the same base was reportedly targeted by drones believed to be Iranian, allegedly aiming at the runway facilities. Later in the day, another attack attempt triggered loud explosions around the British installation located near Limassol, raising concerns about the growing regional security situation.

The UK Ministry of Defence told BBC that the drone attack on Sunday evening caused only minimal damage, adding that operations at the base continue as normal. Officials also dismissed reports suggesting that some personnel might be sent home from Cyprus and confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine the origin of the drones.

RAF Akrotiri hosts around 2,000 service members and their families, and officials indicated that the base may have been targeted by Iran or groups aligned with Tehran, as regional tensions remain high following recent military developments.
