A secret tunnel, which has been used, among other things, to smuggle migrants from Mexico into the United States, is set to be closed, according to Mexican border officials, as reported by the BBC.
Stretching between Ciudad Juarez in Mexico and El Paso in Texas, USA, the 300-meter tunnel was opened in a drainage system and was only discovered last week, although authorities estimate that it took nearly a year to construct.
Authorities are now investigating whether local officials were aware of the tunnel’s construction.
Security has been increased on both sides of the border ahead of Donald Trump’s inauguration as US president on Monday. Trump had pledged to begin mass deportations of illegal immigrants as soon as he took office.
The tunnel had been reinforced with wooden beams to prevent collapses and was equipped with lighting and ventilation.
