The hearing of six suspects accused of attempted aggravated murder during a violent clash with members of the elite Serbian military unit “Cobras” in Novi Sad was scheduled to begin today at 14:00 but has been delayed due to procedural reasons, according to defense lawyer Dejan Čortan.

Čortan told N1 that the prosecution informed him the hearing would be postponed until the criminal complaint from police arrives.

The lawyer added that he expects prosecutors to request detention, but not based on the defendants’ guilt or innocence. Instead, he claims the case represents a “politically instructed process.”

Background of the Case

On Wednesday, during anti-government protests in Novi Sad, several individuals were arrested for allegedly attacking members of the Cobras unit. They were initially brought in for questioning as citizens, but later became suspects in the case.

Authorities confirmed that the suspects were detained for 48 hours on suspicion of attempted aggravated murder, following violent incidents in which seven Serbian Army members were injured—including four with serious bodily harm.

According to reports, Serbian Army warrant officer Vladimir Brkušanin drew his weapon during the clash and fired shots into the air.

Lawyers Claim Rights Violations

Defense attorneys said they were denied access to their clients for over 12 hours, with no information provided about the grounds for their detention. They argue this violates the right to legal representation and fair procedure.

The incident has sparked political controversy, with opposition figures alleging state pressure and misuse of institutions, while government officials insist the suspects must be held accountable for violence against the military.
