The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora (MPJD) of the Republic of Kosovo has confirmed that the High Court in Belgrade—specifically the Department for War Crimes—has ordered 30 days of pretrial detention for Kosovo citizen Lulzim Halili.

Halili was arrested by Serbian authorities on July 22. According to Serbia’s Office of the War Crimes Prosecutor, he is being accused of “organizing and inciting the commission of war crimes and genocide”, based on Article 145, Paragraph 2, and Article 1 of the Criminal Code of the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY).

Following the confirmation that criminal proceedings have officially begun, Kosovo’s Liaison Office in Serbia will immediately submit a formal request to visit Halili at the detention center where he is currently being held.

“Since it has now been confirmed that criminal proceedings have been initiated against Mr. Halili, the Liaison Office of the Republic of Kosovo in Serbia will immediately submit a formal request to the High Court of Belgrade, Department for War Crimes, to visit him in the court’s detention center,” stated the Ministry.

The Ministry also assured the public that it will continue to monitor the case closely and keep citizens informed of all future developments.
