Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti has stated that Serbia used rape as a weapon of war in Kosovo.
He made these remarks during a discussion organized by Medica Gjakova on critical reflections about research on wartime rapes in Kosovo.
“The wars of the 1990s in the former Yugoslavia left lasting consequences for many families. This was also one of Serbia’s strategies. In silence and social exclusion, survivors of these crimes became a driving force for the recognition and prosecution of this war crime. In Kosovo, it was used as a weapon by Serbia, a weapon that has had widespread effects on individuals, families, the entire population, and society. Therefore, we must work to mitigate the destructive impact of this crime.”
Kurti emphasized that silence in the face of this crime is not an option.
“In our efforts to address the wounds of the past, we are taking steps forward together. For the first time, a Transitional Justice Strategy has been adopted. Implementing this strategy requires commitment from all of us. Thank you to Medica Gjakova and Medica Mondiale for this valuable study on the consequences. We call for solidarity from families and society,” Kurti said.
