Serbian police are conducting an operation in Novi Sad targeting a group suspected of planning to provoke violence in Belgrade on October 25, the day of Serbia’s snap parliamentary elections, according to Serbian media reports.
The operation was reported by several Serbian news outlets, citing unofficial sources. Authorities have not yet officially confirmed the operation or disclosed the number of people arrested.
According to the Serbian newspaper Kurir, the group is allegedly led by a drug dealer who planned to travel to Belgrade with around 80 hooligans on election day to cause unrest.
The reported plan allegedly included setting cars on fire, attacking government supporters, stealing money, throwing Molotov cocktails from scooters and engaging in clashes with police.
The reports also state that searches are underway at buildings and premises used by the suspects.
Other Serbian media outlets, including Blic, B92 and Mondo, have published similar accounts, also citing unofficial sources.
Serbia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and the prosecution have not publicly confirmed the operation, identified the suspects or provided details about any arrests.
Snap parliamentary elections in Serbia are scheduled for Sunday, October 25.
