Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić is traveling to Ukraine today, marking his first visit to the country since the full-scale war began in 2022. This visit by the head of state, who has maintained cordial relations with Moscow, was reported by Agence France-Presse (AFP).

“The President of Serbia will visit Ukraine on Wednesday, June 11, where he will participate in the Ukraine-Southeast Europe summit,” a brief statement from his cabinet announced.

This visit comes just days after Russia accused Serbian arms manufacturing companies of attempting to “shoot Moscow in the back” by selling ammunition to Ukraine, AFP noted. The claim of Serbian ammunition in Ukraine has never been publicly acknowledged or fully denied by Belgrade, the agency added.

Vučić, “who balances between his historical ally Russia and the desire to join the European Union,” was present on May 9 in Moscow’s Red Square to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany. Since February 2022, Belgrade has refused to sever ties with Moscow and has not implemented any sanctions against Russia, although it has voted against Russia in UN resolutions, AFP stated. Belgrade largely relies on Moscow for gas supplies, which it receives at very favorable prices.
