American expert on the Western Balkans Daniel Serwer has described the establishment of the Kosovo Specialist Chambers as a major mistake, criticizing how former members of the Kosovo Liberation Army are being treated in the court process.
In an interview with A2 CNN, Serwer said that the way the court has handled cases involving former KLA fighters represents an injustice and argued that the tribunal has exceeded its mandate.
“I see it as turning the victim into the perpetrator, and I am very disappointed with the court. It took a broad interpretation of its mandate. I do not like this at all, and it is turning out to be a big mistake that I encouraged politicians in Kosovo to implement,” Serwer said.
He warned that the court’s current direction could damage the credibility of the trials, potentially discrediting the judicial process rather than the KLA itself.
Concerns Over the Peace Board
Serwer also commented on the so-called Peace Board, describing it as a flawed idea that was authorized without a clear mandate by the United Nations Security Council.
According to him, participation in such mechanisms is viewed with skepticism by European countries, although he added that Kosovo should still use international platforms to raise its global profile.
He noted that Kosovo and Albania are working to strengthen their international presence, despite the controversies surrounding these initiatives.
