The American professor at Johns Hopkins University, Daniel Serwer, has said that the new government of Serbia includes ministers that the US has already sanctioned for corruption and Russophiles. According to Server, Vucic “leaves little room for those who argue that Serbia is towards the West”.

According to him, the Serbian president is openly displaying his ambition to extend his authority to Serb-controlled Bosnia and Herzegovina, all of Montenegro and the Serb-majority north of Kosovo.

“The Parliament of Serbia approved the new government of the country last week. The personnel and the program represent a further turn towards the ethno-nationalist, anti-EU right. AP makes many details easily accessible. The government includes ministers the US has already sanctioned for corruption, as well as outright Russophile sycophants. Not to mention a prime minister who led Serbia’s Ministry of Defense last year when he was complicit in a terrorist attack in northern Kosovo, the kidnapping of Kosovo police and riots against NATO-led peacekeepers. He has already reiterated Serbia’s desire for good relations with Russia and its refusal to join EU sanctions against Moscow,” he said.

“President Vučić is leaving little room for those who argue that Serbia is towards the West. In recent months he has visibly met with the would-be dictators of Hungary and Azerbaijan, as well as the very real authoritarians who rule Belarus, Russia and China. Vučić is making no secret of his ambition to extend his authority to 49% of Serb-controlled Bosnia and Herzegovina, all of Montenegro and Serb-majority northern Kosovo. Vucic also presided in December over a grotesquely unfair national election and a fraudulent municipal election in Belgrade, which have prompted Freedom House to continue downgrading Serbia’s democracy scores,” Serwer added.
