Heavy rainfall over the past hours has caused widespread flooding, landslides, and disruptions to road traffic across several regions of Albania. Rising river levels and inundated farmland are reported in Shkodër, Durrës, Lezhë, Gjirokastër, Dibër, and Berat, while other regions remain largely stable.
Regional Impact
- Shkodër: Rivers Drin, Kir, and Bunë have overflowed, affecting the Ana e Malit and Dajç administrative units. Municipal and civil emergency teams are on the ground, and pumping stations are operating at full capacity, with water levels currently below critical thresholds.
- Durrës: Out of 5,477 inspected homes, 1,711 have reported damage, prompting the evacuation of 851 residents, mainly from Sukth and Katund i Ri. Approximately 2,000 hectares of farmland are submerged. Authorities continue to assess damages.
- Lezhë: Water levels in agricultural areas are decreasing, and teams are clearing water from homes. All pumping stations are operational except Gocaj, affected by power outages. The Drin River is falling, while the Mat River rises due to discharges from Shkopet and Qafë Mollë hydroelectric plants. Roadways remain passable.
- Gjirokastër and Dibër: Authorities are working to clear blocked roads from landslides and remove water from flooded structures.
- Berat and Elbasan: Increased flows in the Osum and Devoll rivers have caused flooding in agricultural areas. Continuous monitoring is underway.
Emergency Response
The Armed Forces, in coordination with the National Civil Protection Agency and the Ministry of Defence, are assisting with evacuations, aid distribution, and emergency operations.
Authorities urge residents in affected areas to remain vigilant and follow instructions from local emergency services.
