Athens, July 31, 2025 — Several regions across Greece were severely affected on Wednesday by a powerful storm system that brought torrential rainfall, flooding, and strong winds, causing widespread disruption in major urban centers and coastal areas.
The Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY) issued a red-level weather alert, warning that the storm would persist into the late evening hours. Affected areas include Central Greece, Attica, Sporades, Thessaly, Epirus, and parts of Macedonia, particularly Thessaloniki, Grevena, and Halkidiki.
In Thessaloniki and Halkidiki, heavy downpours overwhelmed drainage systems, leading to significant flooding. In Kathimerini, streets were rendered impassable due to high water levels, while several vehicles were reported stranded.
In the capital, Athens, the storm struck around 14:30 local time, disrupting traffic in districts such as Menidi, where flash flooding created temporary lakes across roadways, complicating mobility and prompting emergency interventions.
EMY stated that the storm system is characterized by localized hailstorms, intense lightning, and gusts exceeding 70 km/h, particularly in central and northern regions. Authorities have urged the public to avoid unnecessary travel and remain indoors during peak storm activity.
Emergency response teams have been deployed in high-risk zones to assist with flood management and road safety operations.
The Greek government is closely monitoring the situation and has pledged swift assistance to municipalities facing damage from the storm.
