Following his return to FC Basel last summer, Xherdan Shaqiri has not only delivered on his promise to fight for trophies but has done so with remarkable impact.
Shaqiri, with his significant influence both on and off the field, spearheaded Basel to their 21st Swiss Super League title, the club’s first since 2017. He then led them to their 14th Swiss Cup triumph, ending a six-year wait for the prestigious domestic cup.
His season was nothing short of extraordinary, boasting an impressive 21 goals and 22 assists in 39 appearances. This stellar performance earned him individual awards and the title of the club’s best player. Shaqiri has successfully revitalized his European career after his stint in the USA, regaining his formidable form with the team where his professional journey began.
Eyeing European Elite: The Champions League Aspiration
Basel is now setting its sights higher. As the Swiss champions, they are set to compete in the Champions League playoffs in August. For Shaqiri, this represents the ultimate goal.
“I think we have a chance, no matter who we play against. We will try to get into the Champions League. It would be a dream for me to play in this competition again with Basel,” he told “Blick.”
The team has already begun preparations in Austria under the guidance of new coach Ludovic Magnin, following the departure of Fabio Celestini. With a refreshed squad and a positive atmosphere, Basel and Shaqiri are determined to make a return to European club football’s elite stage.
