Elections held across the United States have shown a significant decline in support for Republicans.
Following what many have described as an electoral setback, former U.S. President Donald Trump offered an explanation for his party’s poor performance.
On Tuesday, voters handed Democrats major victories, electing candidates from across the party’s ideological spectrum — a clear expression of growing discontent toward President Trump, nearly one year into his second term.
In Virginia, moderate former congresswoman Abigail Spanberger achieved one of the strongest Democratic performances in the state’s recent history, securing a narrow but decisive win.
In New Jersey, another moderate Democrat, Mikie Sherrill, broke through the Republican coalition that Trump and his ally, former state congressman Jack Ciattarelli, had built in an effort to close the gap during the election.
Meanwhile, Zohran Mamdani, 34, is set to lead New York, marking his second victory this year over former governor Andrew Cuomo — first in the Democratic primaries and then in the general election, where Cuomo ran as an independent with Trump’s backing. Despite their political differences, both candidates focused on issues of accessibility and harshly criticized Trump’s performance.
Trump, however, was quick to defend himself and his party, writing:
“Trump wasn’t on the ballot, and the government shutdown were two reasons why Republicans lost tonight’s elections,” he stated.
