Around 32 bodies, mostly babies and children, have been recovered from a mass grave in the western Kenyan town of Kericho, as investigations continue. The exhumation began following a court order for 14 bodies that were initially believed to be buried there.

Government pathologist Richard Njoroge stated that the bodies were found “placed in wooden bags,” with some appearing to originate from hospitals and morgues. Autopsies will determine the time and circumstances of death.

On Tuesday, detectives and forensic teams worked under tight security to recover the bodies, while police cordoned off the area and shocked local residents watched the process.

Two individuals—a healthcare worker and a cemetery caretaker—have been arrested, while others are being questioned. Human rights group Vocal Africa described the discovery as “shocking and horrific,” calling for immediate identification and investigation.

This case comes after a similar incident in 2023 near Malindi, where pastor Paul Mackenzie was arrested following the discovery of 429 bodies, including children, in Shakahola forest.
