A tragic shooting at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Dallas on Wednesday left one person dead and two others seriously injured. Authorities later confirmed that the suspect took his own life after the attack.
At least two of the victims were detainees held at the ICE detention center, officials reported. The facility houses ICE agents, staff, and detained immigrants.
Todd Lyons, ICE Deputy Director, told CNN earlier on Wednesday that three people were shot and transported to the hospital, but did not immediately release their identities.
Christie Noem, Secretary of Homeland Security, confirmed the incident, stating there were “multiple casualties and injuries” inside the detention center. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), she wrote:
“While we still do not know the motive, we know that ICE officers are facing unprecedented violence against them. This must stop. Please pray for the victims and their families.”
Madison Sheehan, Acting Director of ICE, told Fox News that the attack remains an ongoing and highly fluid situation, with the motive still unknown.
“We have seen repeated violence at ICE facilities, and this is not the first time this year that we’ve faced such an attack,” Sheehan said, adding that no ICE officers were injured in the shooting.
The FBI and local authorities have joined the investigation as security measures are being reviewed across ICE facilities nationwide.
