A mass shooting in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn early Sunday morning left three people dead and eight injured, authorities reported. The incident occurred at the “Taste of the City” event hall following an altercation inside the venue.

Details of the Shooting

According to New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire were received around 3:30 a.m. Police arrived minutes later and found 11 individuals shot inside the hall.

Three victims—a 27-year-old man, a 35-year-old man, and another individual whose age has not been released—were pronounced dead at the scene. The injured, comprising five men and three women aged 27 to 61, were immediately transported to local hospitals. Their current conditions have not been publicly disclosed.

Investigators recovered at least 36 shell casings and one firearm near the scene, which authorities are attempting to link to the shooting. Police believe multiple suspects were involved, but no arrests have been made so far.

Context and Reactions

Commissioner Tisch described the event as “an anomaly” amid a general decline in gun incidents in New York City over the past seven months. She emphasized, however, that this does not diminish the tragic nature of the shooting.

The incident follows several other high-profile shootings in New York City this year, including attacks in Times Square and a Manhattan skyscraper.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, there have been 272 mass shootings in the United States so far this year, defined as incidents in which four or more people are injured or killed, excluding the shooter.
