Canada and China temporarily suspended their match in the U20 Women’s Water Polo World Championship in Brazil after gunshots were heard near the pool. Brazilian police confirmed that no one was injured during the incident in Salvador.
The game was paused for about one minute as players retreated to a safe zone and took cover after hearing the shots outside the sports complex. At that moment, China was leading 3-2. Marco Antonio Lemos, president of the Bahia Aquatic Sports Federation, said, “The match was stopped for about a minute. Our team saw police handling the situation.”
Police reported that the shots resulted from a confrontation with a suspected thief fleeing the scene outside the sports venue. Spectators were informed about the incident only after the match resumed.
This is the first edition of the U20 Women’s Water Polo World Championship hosted by Brazil, featuring 16 teams from around the world.
