Shqipe Selimi, a member of parliament and the wife of former Kosovo Liberation Army (UÇK) commander Rexhep Selimi, has expressed strong confidence in her husband’s innocence while calling for impartial justice during ongoing war crimes proceedings in The Hague.
Speaking to KosovaPress and reported by Gazeta Express, Selimi stated that her husband remains resilient despite the legal challenges he is facing.
“Rexha remains strong and does not surrender. I believe in his innocence and in the innocence of his comrades,” she said.
Criticism of Prosecution and Call for Judicial Fairness
Selimi strongly criticized the prosecution’s request for 45-year prison sentences for each of the former UÇK leaders, stating she had no expectations of fairness from the prosecution.
“We do not expect anything better from this prosecution. From the beginning, when they raised the indictment, they made assumptions rather than judgments,” Selimi said.
She further alleged that prosecutors relied on misinformation and case files obtained from Serbia, while emphasizing her trust in the judiciary.
“We expect justice from competent judges. I hope they will not be influenced by the words of prosecutors, who have spread falsehoods and disinformation,” she added.
Family Visits Remain Limited
Selimi also spoke about the emotional difficulty of visiting detained defendants in The Hague, describing the visits as brief and insufficient for families to spend meaningful time together.
“Visits are short and not enough for us to reunite properly,” she stated.
The trial of former UÇK leaders continues to draw significant public and political attention in Kosovo, where the proceedings are widely viewed as a crucial moment in addressing allegations related to the 1998–1999 conflict.
