Former U.S. President Bill Clinton credited President Donald Trump and regional actors in a statement released after the signing of the ceasefire agreement in Gaza.
“President Trump and his administration, Qatar, and other regional actors deserve great credit for keeping everyone engaged until the deal was reached,” Clinton wrote in a statement posted on X.
Clinton also said that Israel and Hamas “must strive to turn this fragile moment into a lasting peace that ensures dignity and security for both Palestinians and Israelis.”
The former president’s remarks are notable, as he himself had tried to broker peace in the region but ultimately failed during his time in office.
Former Presidents George W. Bush and Joe Biden have not yet commented publicly on the agreement. Barack Obama said last week, after the deal was announced, that “we should all be encouraged and relieved that the end of the conflict is very near,” but did not mention Trump.
