During a joint press conference in Tirana with Albanian President Bajram Begaj, Slovak President Peter Pellegrini reaffirmed that Slovakia will maintain its position of not recognizing Kosovo’s independence.
Pellegrini stated that Slovakia’s stance is based on diplomatic principles and does not reflect any hostility toward Albania or the Albanian people.
Diplomatic Position, Not Hostility
“I will not avoid questions about Kosovo. We discussed this matter with President Begaj, and I presented Slovakia’s position, which aligns with the broader stance of states that have not recognized Kosovo. This decision is grounded in our diplomatic framework and has nothing to do with the Albanian people or Albania as a country. We consider Albanians our friends, and our stance on Kosovo should not be interpreted as opposition to them,” Pellegrini said.
Dialogue and Regional Stability
The Slovak President also referenced ongoing dialogue between Serbia and Kosovo, highlighting the importance of diplomatic efforts for stability in the region. He acknowledged Albania’s involvement in the dialogue process and emphasized the need to build bridges between all parties.
“I informed President Begaj about the latest developments in the Serbia-Kosovo dialogue and regional security concerns. Albania plays an important role, with its government having a special representative in the ongoing discussions. Dialogue must continue as a key mechanism for long-term peace,” he added.
Pellegrini’s remarks come amid increasing international efforts to mediate tensions in the Balkans and promote stability in the region.
