Heavy snowfall across Croatia today has created serious disruptions on the country’s road network, blocking several routes and making driving conditions increasingly difficult.
The meteorological page Crometeo published video footage from areas near Split and Klis, showing multiple vehicles stuck in the snow, causing significant delays and hazardous situations for drivers.
“The annual gathering of summer-tire enthusiasts near Split,” Crometeo wrote ironically alongside the footage, highlighting how many drivers failed to equip their cars with winter tires despite worsening weather conditions.
Although Dalmatia is typically not included in regions where winter equipment is mandatory between 15 November and 15 April, the use of such equipment becomes obligatory once winter conditions are officially declared — meaning when snow or ice is present on the road, significantly increasing the risk of traffic accidents, according to Index.hr.
Winter equipment includes:
- M+S winter tires, or four summer tires with at least 4 mm tread depth, and
- Snow chains, which must be kept readily available for installation on the vehicle’s driving wheels.
Authorities are urging drivers to prepare in advance, check road conditions, and avoid long trips without proper winter equipment to prevent dangerous situations on the roads.
