Sixty million Americans across more than 30 states are under the “attack” of a massive snowstorm that could bring the heaviest snowfall and the coldest temperatures in over a decade.

Thousands of flights have been delayed or canceled, many roads are blocked, and schools have been closed due to the storm.

A state of emergency has been declared so far in seven states—Kansas, one of the hardest-hit areas, Missouri, Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia, Arkansas, and parts of New Jersey, reports the BBC, as cited by Sinjali.

Forecasters say the extreme weather is being caused by a polar vortex—a cold air mass circulating around the Arctic—bringing cold weather to the central US.
