Peter Sorensen, the EU Special Representative for the Kosovo-Serbia Dialogue, has emphasized the importance of clarifying the fate of those missing during the war in Kosovo, calling it a humanitarian necessity.

“Families still waiting to learn the fate of their loved ones deserve clarity and justice. Therefore, the issue of missing persons remains a priority for me in the dialogue,” Sorensen wrote on X following a visit to the Institute of Forensic Medicine on Wednesday.

Before concluding his first official visit to Kosovo, Sorensen also visited the Merdare border point, where he underscored the need for modernizing all border crossings between Kosovo and Serbia.

“Before leaving Kosovo, I stopped at Merdare – a modern crossing point built by the EU. It is time to increase cooperation to modernize all other border points between Kosovo and Serbia,” Sorensen stated.

Sorensen, who has been in Kosovo since Monday, has met with state leaders to discuss moving the dialogue process forward. While he refrained from answering questions about possible compromises between Prishtina and Belgrade, he emphasized that “it is up to the parties to define that.”

Sorensen’s visit marks his first official trip to Kosovo since assuming the role of EU Special Representative for the dialogue. Following this visit, he is set to travel to Belgrade, after which he plans to sit down and assess “where we stand.”
