In a recent interview with KosovaPress, former Kosovo Ambassador to the United States, Avni Spahiu, emphasized the critical need for increased lobbying efforts in the U.S. Congress, particularly at a time when Kosovo requires support the most. He noted that, following Kosovo’s declaration of independence, the U.S. Department of State, the White House, and Congress provided significant backing. However, he stressed that current international changes make lobbying in Washington more important than ever.

Spahiu pointed out that, during the 1990s, when Kosovo was facing repression from Serbia, the U.S. Congress was understanding and supportive. He believes that now is the time to intensify efforts to regain the credibility Kosovo once enjoyed in its relations with the U.S.

He also highlighted the shifting geopolitical landscape, particularly under the Trump administration, which has led to a new doctrine aimed at reasserting America as a global leader. Spahiu argued that Europe must take greater responsibility for its own security, no longer relying solely on U.S. support.

Reflecting on the broader geopolitical changes, Spahiu foresees a shift in U.S. foreign policy, with a focus on different regions and crises, adding that the world must wait to see how these developments will unfold. He expressed confidence that the U.S. will continue its commitment to KFOR under NATO leadership, despite some concerns about potential American withdrawal.

Additionally, Spahiu spoke about the ongoing challenges Serbia poses, particularly in relation to humanitarian issues such as missing persons, and criticized President Aleksandar Vučić’s regime for lacking the goodwill necessary for meaningful normalization with Kosovo.
