Political analyst Nexhmedin Spahiu has responded to a wave of public criticism following his meeting on Saturday with Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Đurić in Belgrade. The meeting, which sparked debate across Kosovo’s public and political spheres, was made public by Spahiu himself through a post and photo shared on social media.
“With Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Đurić, in his office in Belgrade,” Spahiu captioned the photo.
In a statement to Tëvë1, Spahiu explained that the two have known each other for over ten years, maintaining ongoing communication. He added that the meeting occurred while he was attending a conference in Belgrade, and upon learning of his presence, Gjurić invited him for a private discussion lasting about an hour.
“We discussed the challenges in the region, the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue, and interethnic relations,” said Spahiu.
“I always wear the Kosovo flag on my jacket, whether in Belgrade or anywhere else in the world—this is natural,” he emphasized.
Meanwhile, Minister Đurić confirmed the meeting on the social platform “X” (formerly Twitter), stating:
“A conversation with Professor Nexhmedin Spahiu on ways to overcome tensions and improve interethnic relations.”
The meeting comes at a sensitive time for Kosovo-Serbia relations, and some voices in Kosovo have questioned Spahiu’s motives and timing, especially in light of ongoing security and political tensions in the region.
Still, others see this gesture as part of informal dialogue efforts needed to build trust and pave paths to understanding—even when they stir controversy.
