Spain’s Ministry of the Interior has declared a state of emergency following a massive power outage on Monday, according to the BBC.

The causes of the problems are still under investigation, but for now, a cyberattack has been ruled out.

The Ministry stated that regions requesting it could apply the emergency status. So far, Madrid, Andalusia, and Extremadura have requested that the central government take over public order and other functions.

Earlier, Spain and Portugal were hit on Monday by a power outage that paralyzed public transportation, caused major traffic jams, and led to flight delays. Currently, public service operators are working to restore the electric grid’s functionality.
