Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) issued a statement today criticizing the recent actions of the authorities in Republika Srpska (RS), stating that they are in contradiction with the constitutional order of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) and endanger the territorial integrity and stability of the country, which is vital for the entire Western Balkans region.
The Spanish MFA also supported the temporary suspension of the controversial laws passed by the RS National Assembly.
“We call for full respect for BiH’s institutions and the decisions of the Constitutional Court made on March 7. We urge all political actors to reduce tensions and continue dialogue for the benefit of all BiH citizens,” the statement read, according to Sarajevo media.
The BiH Constitutional Court ruled on Friday to annul RS laws that, among other things, prohibited the functioning of the BiH Court, Prosecutor’s Office, High Judicial and Prosecutorial Council (HJPC), and the BiH Agency for Investigation and Protection (SIPA) within RS territory.
These laws were adopted by the RS National Assembly shortly after the BiH Court issued a first-instance guilty verdict against RS President Milorad Dodik for failing to implement decisions by the High Representative in BiH, Christian Schmidt.
The adoption of these laws in RS was condemned in recent days by the United States, the EU Delegation in BiH, the UK, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands.
