Spain’s Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares warned on Tuesday that the future European security framework is at risk, stressing that Ukraine must be provided with strong security guarantees.
Albares said he spoke by phone with his Ukrainian counterpart Andrii Sybiha, expressing hope that 2026 will finally bring peace to the Ukrainian people.
“It is unacceptable that Ukrainians are spending Christmas under bombs,” Albares wrote on social media platform X.
His remarks followed recent Russian attacks that killed three people and caused power outages across several Ukrainian regions, according to Ukrainian officials.
Albares reaffirmed Spain’s full support for negotiations aimed at achieving a just and lasting peace in Ukraine, emphasizing the need for European unity and determination.
“Europe must remain united and resolute, because the future European security framework is at risk,” he said.
The Spanish foreign minister added that Ukraine must receive strong security guarantees, stressing that any decision regarding Ukraine’s future—especially concerning its territories—can only be made by the Ukrainian people.
His comments came after a meeting on Sunday between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Florida, where the leaders discussed the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia.
Following the talks, Trump told reporters that he had also discussed post-war reconstruction of Ukraine with Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying that Moscow would assist in rebuilding efforts, including the supply of energy and electricity at very low prices.
