Montenegro’s Prime Minister Milojko Spajić stated that he fully agrees the European Union should be the final destination for the entire Western Balkans.

However, Spajić emphasized that Montenegro expects to be ready to join the EU by 2028, noting that he hopes Serbia and other regional candidates will speed up their integration efforts.

He wrote this on X (formerly Twitter), referencing an earlier statement by Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, who announced he would propose to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen that the entire Western Balkans should join the EU together.

Vučić made the remarks during the Beltalks Forum – Belgrade Economic Talks, where he also announced a significant meeting in Brussels with von der Leyen and Antonio Costa.

According to Vučić, a collective accession of the Western Balkans is the “best idea”, arguing that leaving any country behind would create strategic and political challenges.
“Everyone will feel better — Albanians, Bosnians, and others. I keep hearing only positive reactions to this idea,” Vučić said, adding that he would present the proposal during today’s discussions in Brussels.
