The Specialized Chambers in The Hague announced that opening statements in the trial of Hashim Thaçi, Bashkim Smakaj, Isni Kilaj, Fadil Fazliu, and Hajredin Kuçi will take place on February 27. The case concerns alleged obstruction of justice.

The accused are charged with influencing the testimony of witnesses summoned by the Prosecution in the “Thaçi and Others” war crimes case during the period from April to November 2023.

According to the indictment confirmed on November 29, 2024, Thaçi is alleged to have provided confidential information to his collaborators and instructed them to interfere with witness testimonies.

All five defendants have pleaded not guilty. Following the opening statements, the Prosecution will begin presenting its evidence.

Broader Context

Thaçi, the former President of Kosovo, is also facing charges for war crimes and crimes against humanity, alongside three other former commanders of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA): Kadri Veseli, Rexhep Selimi, and Jakup Krasniqi. All four have denied the charges.

Last week, closing statements were delivered, with the defense arguing insufficient evidence to prove the alleged crimes, while the Prosecution urged the court to find the defendants guilty.

After the conclusion of the statements, the case will move to the judges’ panel, which has a three-month timeframe to issue a verdict, with the possibility of an extension if necessary.

This announcement coincides with Kosovo marking its 18th anniversary of independence, highlighting ongoing challenges in the country’s pursuit of justice and accountability for wartime actions.
