Kosovo’s Prime Minister Albin Kurti has been vocal in his request to lift the European Union’s punitive measures against Kosovo during his meetings within the framework of the Berlin Process. He asked German Chancellor Olaf Scholz for support in this regard and made the same request to Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani.

In response to Kurti’s request, EU spokesman Peter Stano stated today, “It is not Kosovo, nor its Prime Minister, that decide whether the measures will be lifted; this is a decision that must be made by the member states.”

He noted that discussions on this issue continue among the bloc’s countries, mentioning the report by his boss, High Representative Josep Borrell, which recommended the lifting of these measures.

“The High Representative issued a statement on June 3 on behalf of the EU, followed by the High Representative’s report on Kosovo’s fulfillment of EU requirements. Discussions on the lifting of measures for Kosovo continue among the member states in the Council,” Stano said.

Borrell has submitted the report regarding the measures imposed on Kosovo to the EU member states in June of this year, but no decision has yet been made.
