British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that the United Kingdom and France will work with Ukraine to develop a ceasefire plan, which will then be presented to the United States.
According to Starmer, the initiative follows a phone conversation he had with Presidents Donald Trump, Emmanuel Macron, and Volodymyr Zelensky after the failure of Friday’s meeting in the Oval Office.
Starmer suggested that “few other countries” might be involved in this effort to reduce arms. He described this initiative as a “significant step forward” as relations between Kyiv and Washington were severely damaged on Friday.
“No one wants this conflict to continue more than Ukrainians. I believe Trump is also committed to a long-term peace,” said the British leader in an interview with the BBC.
When asked about the details regarding whether the plan would be accepted by the U.S. president, Starmer stated: “This means we are aligned on the terms of the agreement, and this alignment must be protected.”
“President Zelensky is right to be concerned and to say that if an agreement is reached, it must be upheld. That is why we’ve discussed guarantees and how we will protect the agreement if it’s made,” added Starmer, just before the European leaders’ summit in London.
