British Prime Minister Keir Starmer reaffirmed his support for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during a phone call on Monday, following controversial remarks by former U.S. President Donald Trump.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump labeled Zelensky a “dictator” and warned him to “move fast, or there will be no country left.”
According to a statement from Downing Street, “Prime Minister Starmer spoke with President Zelensky tonight and emphasized the need for everyone to work together.”
Starmer expressed his support for Zelensky as “the democratically elected leader of Ukraine” and defended the decision to postpone elections due to the ongoing war, citing historical precedent from the UK during World War II.
The British prime minister also reiterated his commitment to U.S.-led efforts to secure a lasting peace in Ukraine that would prevent future Russian aggression.
